Let's connect @ OliverSpence.com A little bit of my background: I've been in the information technology industry since graduating from the University of Calgary with a Computer Science degree in 2001. I began my IT career as a software developer but soon discovered my strengths lay in working closely with clients. This realization led me to the next phase of my career as a business analyst. Clients appreciated my calm, methodical approach to project analysis and management. With each project, my natural leadership skills became more apparent, eventually leading me to roles as a team lead and business liaison. My IT career soon brought me into teaching and mentoring others. I joined the Shaw Practice Leadership Team to oversee the Business Analysis discipline, working primarily with software business analysts and developing BA standards and practices. From there, I was approached by SAIT to help build and create a business analysis certificate program. In addition to developing the course content, I was also asked to teach some of the courses. I never shy away from a challenge and thrive on solving problems and thinking outside the box. At WSP, my team and I were tasked with replacing an archaic project management tool to improve project delivery times. We reimagined how to manage geomatic projects using GIS visual mapping, linking real-time data collection from the field directly into the project. After two years of development, we released an integrated suite of five tools, reducing the average project delivery time from 30 days to 7 days. With nearly 25 years in IT, I bring a wealth of experience and skills to every endeavor. Sports has been a significant part of my life. I am a former 400m sprinter who competed for the Spartans, the University of Calgary, Team Alberta, and Team Canada. I remain active by playing soccer, biking, and hiking. As in sports, I approach my work with the same determination and discipline needed to perform at the highest level, always looking forward to the next challenge.
