About Jayan Ravendra

Hello! I'm Jayan. I am a teacher. I teach primary and secondary English. I've always loved reading. Two of my favourite authors are Jodi Picoult and Salman Rushdie. I've always liked how Jodi Picoult delves deep into niche occupations in her books. She also writes from different character's perspectives in different chapters, which I found to be very interesting as it encourages the reader to consider, understand, and empathise with different people, their situations, and their thought processes. Salman Rushdie mixes real-world events and fantasy, which puts a really fascinating spin on otherwise mundane events. One joy I've experienced when reading his books is realising that he includes this magical place called "Qaf" in almost every book, linking otherwise separate stories. When I realised this, I felt like I had discovered a secret that was meant to be revealed only to avid readers. It is this love of reading that spurred me to pursue a BA in English Language and Literature at the Singapore University of Social Sciences. During this course, I had a wonderful time reading and studying classics by Shakespeare, Jane Austen, James Joyce, and many other incredible writers. Additionally, I thoroughly enjoyed studying aspects of language such as morphology and syntax. I especially liked comparing different languages' sentence structures. Where applicable, I share this knowledge with my students. I also use current affairs, short films, and games to make my classes interesting and engaging. Although teaching can be draining at times, I am always happy during a class. The fact that I can make other human beings happier and more knowledgeable at the same time makes teaching extremely rewarding for me.
