Background
About Jayanthi Abraham
Research Interest Area of specialization: Microbial Biotechnology Environmental Microbiology- Bioremediation Bioactive compounds (Antimicrobial and anti cancer). Nanoparticles synthesis and application Have experience in working with isolation and characterisation of microbes from various effluents and using them for biodegradation the effluent Textile mill wastewater, Pharmaceutical waste water, Tanner effluent, sugar mill effluent and Biodegrading diesel. Currently, been working with isolation of pesticide degrading microbes from various agricultural soil such as, ladies finger cultivated soil, paddy field soil, sugarcane field soil and maize cultivated soil. Wide range of unusual microbes was isolated and these isolated organisms were successfully employed in bioremediation of pesticides such as Chlopyrifos, Malathion, Monocrotophos, Endosulfan, Cypermethrin, Profenophos, Lambda cyhalothrin. Low density polythene degradation employing both bacteria and fungus are being carried out. Another area which I have been interested in working is isolation of bioactive compounds from natural source. The isolated compounds are screened for antimicrobial activity towards drug resistant strains and anticancer compounds with cytotoxic effect against human carcinoma cell lines. Bioactive compounds are isolated from microbes with special reference to Streptomyces and screened for their antimicrobial and anticancer properties. Purification of the active compound, NMR studies and In silico studies on docking are also investigated. Synthesis of nanoparticles (Silver, Zinc, Selenium, Lanthanum, Titanium nano particles) and their effect on clinical pathogens and cell line: HeLa cell line, breast cancer cell line (MCF-7), bone cancer cell line (MG 63), are being carried out in my lab. Focusing also on other xenobiotic compounds degradation like antibiotics and hormones in waste water.
