About Jayme Derrah

I have loved astronomy since I was a child, and still do today. One of my passions is educating people on astronomy and science in general. I enjoy public outreach, and have done a fair amount of it for astronomy. The best jobs I've had have been teaching/tutoring, because I want to help students, and get them excited about science. I have a fairly well-rounded background of experience. I've had jobs and experience in research, teaching, customer service, public outreach, software testing and graphic design to name a few. I believe this gives me a fairly unique perspective, and I like finding new ways to apply these experiences. I have strong interests in art as well, I like finding ways to combine science and art. For example, I spent a summer several years ago designing posters for astronomy and physics education for Saint Mary's University in Halifax, they can be viewed here: These posters have been requested around the world, and translated into Arabic and Italian. I worked on a masters degree at the University of Calgary, however my supervisor ran out of funding and then the university stopped funding me after one year. Since then I have explored other jobs, and currently wish to find something more closely related to my field. I am living in Vancouver, my most recent job was in software testing, which allowed me to draw upon my experience writing software and my experiences in employing the scientific method. I was laid off due to lack of projects, and am currently on the hunt for a new job.
