About Jeff Barry

Fundamental to my own professional interests–-as an educator, as a software developer, as a writer, as a reader–-is understanding how we tell and read stories (particularly non-fiction) in digital media. The future of my young daughter’s life is the lens through which I view the changing shape of creativity, learning, and leisure in the early twenty-first century. The essential question of my life's work: How to craft digital experiences that engage others in the complex problems facing the world? My technical expertise: detailed knowledge of Linux and Web development, HTML/CSS, JavaScript, PHP, WordPress customization, APIs. Experience in Python, R, Unreal Engine, iOS SDK, DaVinci Resolve. Comfortable tackling any technology. Current focus: large language models and conversational AI, which is the topic of my 2023 sabbatical research. Curriculum development: taught and/or co-taught undergraduate courses on more than a dozen topics including programming, multimedia storytelling, and writing. Founding director of an academic program in digital culture and information. Founding faculty member of a data science undergraduate minor. My career in academic librarianship has focused on technology management and digital scholarship.
