About Jeff Berg

Jeff Berg takes an architect’s vision to illuminating the public realm sustainably, imbuing a specialty with a holistic perspective. Looking for ways to inspire as well as illuminate, he brings design to light. He first grappled with lighting onstage, doing theatrical design in high school and college for school productions and traveling shows. The hands-on experience sharpened his ability to imagine light in three dimensions and introduced him to concepts in color and electronic controls. A stint as a photographer taught him to calibrate what he could see with what he could measure and how to adjust illumination to control contrast. An early drafting job with an architect renting space from a lighting manufacturer gave him the opportunity to see how fixtures are made while drawing details of them. Studying with and then working for William Lam supplied the best education in architectural lighting one could ask for, inspiring an early interest in sustainable design. Founding and managing a firm that provided both general architectural services and lighting consulting supported a holistic perspective and frequent reminders of the struggles required to bring any building design to fruition. Currently working full time for an engineering firm, formerly a client of his, gives him a perspective on the intersection of infrastructure and architecture.
