My name is Jeff Brown, and I am a designer, fabricator, and consultant for theater, performance spaces and museums. For 7 years after that, as Production Manager for the Duluth Playhouse in Duluth, MN, I led the design teams and coordinated all production aspects of another 100+ productions. I have also done freelance designs for several other local and regional theater companies. My career began in the design fields but has also allowed me to discover great strengths in project management and planning, both for events and for facilities. I have had the opportunity to open brand new scene shops for performing arts centers in Apple Valley, MN and Paradise Valley, AZ, and I have been heavily involved with restoration and renovation discussions about the performance spaces of the art deco NorShor Theatre, for use by the Duluth Playhouse. For the Playhouse I also collaborated with building engineers and architects to redesign an off-site rehearsal and theater education space, and to transform a basement area in the train depot into The Underground, a flexible-design meeting and performance venue for the Playhouse and community groups. During the past year I have broadened my reach beyond theater, now consulting on, designing, and fabricating the learning environment and exhibits of the new Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota in Mankato. This opportunity has greatly strengthened my knowledge of exhibit design and construction, as well as having rejuvenated my creativity and passion for discovery and research – and the thrill of being involved in a project that will have a true legacy.
