About Jeff Heiking

I have been fortunate to have had 2 great careers since completing my engineering degree at Georgia Tech - 11 years as a civil engineer and 20 years in education (some of which overlapped with my time as an engineer). I have had a variety of experiences as an engineer. For 3 years I did drafting (both manual and AutoCAD) and plan review of modular buildings; this included some structural design and architectural layout. Then I dedicated 8-1/2 years to civil engineering at the Town of Fishers. There I reviewed civil site designs, and transportation construction plans. After receiving my certification as a Floodplain Manager, I functioned as the Town's Floodplain Administrator for 6 years. I managed a staff of 50 employees including engineers, technicians, GIS professionals, inspectors, and laborers. It was working with and managing this staff that brought my greatest joy while at the Town of Fishers. While I have truly enjoyed my time as an engineer, I have found my greatest passion in the classroom. I have taught physics and math at the high school and collegiate level; and chemistry, engineering, and AutoCAD at the collegiate level. While in the classroom, I worked to reach as many students as possible by including a variety of different activities. Not only did I use my engineering background to present the material such that the students could easily relate, but I included hands-on exercises that made the material more real and relatable.
