This unique experience taught a formula for success used ever since: 1. Understand the technologies that you use, and their strengths and limitations in practical application. Know your people and their jobs. If necessary, work beside them to understand their challenges. Supervise, manage the details, and plan for unexpected change. If you foster an environment where people are not afraid to be honest when they disagree with you or the organization, then new ideas and opportunities to innovate present themselves continually. Innovation promotes competitive advantage, which often leads to success, and success motivates people. After 9 years in the Army, took a second degree in Computer Science and joined Texaco Canada Resources in Calgary Alberta as a software developer specializing in digital signal analysis, and 3D graphics modeling and simulation software for geologists, geophysicists, and engineers. Four years later was appointed to lead the Scientific Systems Development Team, and then after a merger with Esso Canada, led geoscience system development in the Research & Technology Division. Subsequently became the author of the first client / server system development methodology at a major worldwide systems integrator, and then led IT development and technology support operations at a number of companies until becoming an independent IT consultant to specialize in direct hands-on technology roles.
