Background

About Jeffrey Beekman

People living healthy lives. Scientific research has contributed to our understanding and treatment of many human diseases, but many people's lives are affected by some form of disease. By connecting basic to clinical research, I aim to develop innovative solutions that support a healthy living. My research is driven by clinical needs, and I strongly favour to share and work together with all the parties that bring innovations from the lab to society. My lab is embedded in the Regenerative Medicine Center of the University Medical Center Utrecht, and is part of the department of Pediatric Pulmonology. I have the privilege to work with outstanding colleagues, with whom we are exploring new ways to individualize clinical care and improve drug development. For this, we are developing applications in laboratory-grown miniature organs from patient-derived airway and intestinal stem cells or organoids. Our research has been awarded with the ‘Best Translational research prize 2012-2014’ from the Dutch Respiratory Society (NRS) and ‘Best translational article 2013’ (Maarten Kappelle Tweelingen prijs) by the Dutch Pediatric Society, as well as the Gerd Doring award of the European CF society (ECFS). In 2017, I received the ECFS award, becoming the ECFS person-of-the-year, the European Respiratory Society Excellence Award for Research in Cystic Fibrosis and the Willy van Heumen prize. To my knowledge, our research demonstrated for the first time that patient-derived intestinal organoids can mediate personalised medicine for people with cystic fibrosis. Please look at our research plans for the next five years that we developed in collaboration with the Dutch CF society If you would like to help, please feel free to support any way you can!
