About Jeffrey M. McMahon

I received my Ph.D. in theoretical physical chemistry from Northwestern University (NU) in 2010, while jointly employed at the Center for Nanoscale Materials at Argonne National Laboratory, applying electrodynamics methods to problems in nanophotonics as well as semiclassical light-matter interactions. I then joined the Institute for Condensed Matter Theory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a postdoctoral fellow, applying novel many-body methods and optimization algorithms to the discovery and simulation of materials. In 2013, I formed Algorithms in Motion LLC, a nonprofit organization that develops, maintains, and distributes open source software for scientific computing. Recently, I rejoined NU as a visiting scholar, where I am using macroscopic quantum electrodynamics to study the interaction between surface plasmons and quantum systems. In the fall of 2014, I will be applying for academic jobs. My research has appeared in over 40 publications, and has resulted in numerous awards and recognitions. These include, for example, awards from the American Chemical Society, Springer, and NU; invitations to prestigious conferences, such as the 59th Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates and the 2012 Gordon Research Conference; and identification by the U.S. Department of Labor as an expert in the field of nanotechnology. My capability as a scientist is further highlighted by the number and quality of government programs and scientific journals that I am a reviewer for, as well as the talks that I have been invited to give. I am interested in the development and application of theoretical models and computational methods to provide the accurate and efficient solutions to problems of scientific importance. Specific areas of interest include the theory and simulation of materials, nanophotonics, and materials discovery.
