Background
About Jeffrey Russell
Physician Assistant and Medical Sciences Educator with 10 years experience practicing in emergency medicine and urgent care settings and 7 years experience as an academic instructor. My passion is combining my medical experience with my pedagogical training to effectively and efficiently educate patients, students, and the general public on medical topics ranging from basic sciences, medical conditions and treatments, and healthcare systems and infrastructure. I am interested in work opportunities that will allow me to use my medical expertise and skills as an educator in order to help other clinicians, businesses, and communities bridge knowledge gaps and acquire the skills and insights that will help them succeed. I am open to nontraditional applications of these skills in fields such as healthtech, medical device, pharmaceuticals, clinician training, community education, and others. Upon entering my clinical career in emergency medicine with Vituity/Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital Emergency Department, my background as a sciences educator and facilitator in anatomy and surgical skills led to assuming a leadership role in the preceptorship of dozens of PA and NP students. In 2016 I accepted an invitation for an adjunct faculty role with the Physician Assistant Program at what is now the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where I am a regular lecturer with perpetually increasing course load and involvement. In 2020 I completed a Fellowship with Physician Assistant Leadership and Learning Academy (PALLA) as an inaugural class graduate, where I studied learning theory and curricular design, and collaborated in writing the curriculum for a telehealth educational unit with ongoing intent to be implemented into existing PA programs throughout the country. The futures of medicine and physician assistant education are headed quickly towards reliance on remote systems and telehealth as the standards for delivery, only further exemplified by the exceptional pressures of the COVID-19 crisis. I am enthused to meet the challenge of enacting this change, both as a clinician and as an educator to students and healthtech companies. This is evidenced by my role in curricular design of telehealth education for physician assistants, and reinforced through culmination of my experiences in clinical practice for an urban and severely underserved population and leadership/education in the physician assistant domain. It is my mission to be on the forefront of this movement, helping to blaze the trail for physician assistants in synchronous and asynchronous remote roles.
