About Jelmer Evers

I'm a history teacher, union activist, and author. And editor of "Het Alternatief" and "Flip the System" book series and author of other books. Nominated twice for the Global Teacher Prize in 2015 and 2016. Currently I'm vice-president of the General Education Union - Algemene Onderwijsbond (AOb) For many years I have taught and learned at UniC, a fantastic innovative secondary school in Utrecht in the Netherlands where students and teachers can truly shine. Before joining the AOb board I was on a five year teacher leadership fellowship at Education International in Brussels for two days a week. I've worked with many teacher unions/associations and international organisations around the world. I'm a firm advocate for teacher leadership. For too long teachers (in the Netherlands) have been on the sideline and other people lacking in classroom experience have decided on and have dominated educational policy. The best institution to achieve this for the profession is a strong and democratic education union, advocating for both professional/educational and industrial issues. A union which is a thriving inspriring association for and by its members, locally, nationally and internationally (via ETUCE and EI)
