About Jenna Ng

After law school and a brief bout practising as a finance lawyer, I decided to change my life and obtained a PhD in Film Studies from University College London. That was a time ago! Academia is now my heart and soul - I am currently Professor of Digital Media and Culture at the University of York where I am also Head of Creative Technologies leading undergrad and postgrad programmes in Interactive Media; Digital Culture; Creative AI; Music Production and Audio Culture; and line manager to a team of 20 academics. Previously, I was Chair of Board of Studies overseeing teaching, curricula and examination matters across ~25 programmes and ~90 teaching staff members, I am Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), a qualification which recognises high level teaching impact, influence and effectiveness. I have won several university awards for my leadership and management. In my research, I have published widely on digital media and visual culture. My book, The Post-Screen Through Virtual Reality, Holograms and Light Projections (University of Amsterdam Press, 2021), received an Honourable Mention at the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies publication awards. I am also an award-winning creative practice researcher, with outputs including second screen installations; multimedia scholarship; video essays; and open-access collaborative initiatives. My creative research work has won the John Culkin Award for Outstanding Praxis; the Learning on Screen Special Jury Prize (and nominated in the "Creative Reuse" category); and the Media, Communication and Cultural Studies Association (MECCSA) Practice-Based Research of the Year award. I have supervised several Masters by Research, MPhil and PhD theses to completion. I am also an experienced research examiner. I am dedicated to teaching excellence: I've won the York Vice-Chancellor's Teaching Award, have been nominated several times for the Student Union Excellence Awards and received a "Highly Commended" in the "Most Inspiring" category. I am an experienced External Examiner and External Assessor for UK programmes, upholding standards and principles. When not in school, I write creatively: I have published poetry; made the Bridport Prize longlist (40 from 3,428 entries); and was runner-up at the Bi'an Awards. I once represented Singapore in chess and still push the odd piece. I scuba dive, ski, sail, cycle and hike. Above all, I look at the mirror each day and ask myself if this was my last day on earth, would I still do what I would be doing today, and I try to say yes.
