Background

About Jennifer Boyer

I am a Holocaust & Genocide Scholar, Intersectional Social Historian, Educator, Story-Teller, Bridge-Builder, and Peace Advocate. I am looking to utilize my doctorate in HGS, as well as my skills and experiences accumulated in two decades of working in Northumberland County's human services (Intake Officer and Case Manager at Domestic Relations & Family Therapist in Home-based Mental Health) and in education as a middle and high school history teacher. I possess impeccable research and writing skills, am an experienced public speaker, hard worker and fast learner; however, my strength lay in my relationship-building skills. My time in human services trained me to manage crises, de-escalate volatile situations, and mediate peaceful solutions—skills that have served me well as an educator and in life. My time there also deepened my empathy for people who struggle. As a result of my empathetic nature and experience in human services, my priority as an educator was to create safe spaces for all of my students so that they could freely be themselves and have the best learning experience possible. My classroom became a haven for students who were different, struggling, or just having a bad day. I am exceptionally proud of my legacy in both fields and will bring these parts of me and much more to any institution or organization. Being a case manager and teacher has given me exceptional management experience that is easily transferrable to the world outside of human services and education. The volume of teenagers I managed on a daily basis as a teacher is astounding.Three times a day, 180 days a year, for 84-minute blocks at a time, I managed (on average) 27 students, which means I not only kept them in their seats, but also engaged and participating in class. This is a feat not many people can achieve, yet is often overlooked as irrelevant outside of education. Furthermore, six times over my tenure as a high school teacher, I successfully and safely planned, organized, traveled with, and chaperoned large groups (30 on average) of students. I maintain all conflict can be resolved peacefully and try to help build bridges to mend relationships. I am passionate, driven, and believe our purpose is to serve others.especially those in need, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, faith, ethnicity, etc. I embrace and exercise means of diversity, equity, and inclusion. In fact, my dissertation's underlying argument was about the need to create a more inclusive, diverse historical narrative that is representative of all peoples and their many intersections.
