Regulator experience: NPDES & Pretreatment Industrial Compliance inspector for the State of Mississippi: As a compliance inspector, I have to familiarize myself with applicable regulations and technologies that are available to comply with those regs. EPA has allowed the state of Mississippi to be the controlling authority in the majority of wastewater regulation. Conditions and effluent guidelines are written in permits and facilities are responsible for making sure they follow those. Although permits are written in black and white, applying these principles is not so clean cut. There are gray areas, or details that are not as easily outlined in regulation. I'm here to bridge the gap between theory and application. My job is to help the facility correctly interpret and apply the regulations without actually consulting them on how to achieve that goal. It's a thin line to walk, but I find myself learning so much every day about the way our state deals with water, and I respect the process. I have to know a little about everything: permit writing, permit application, modifications, consultants reach, DMR submissions, renewal, issues that POTWs are subject to, sewer ordinances in areas, water bodies that are 303d, non-compliance enforcement actions, problem sites, and so much more.
