About Jennifer Katlen

Jennifer N. Katlen, MEd, MSN, APRN, ACNS-BC, CCRN, GERO-BC is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in acute care at Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital. Her nursing career has been diverse, with experience within the Cleveland Clinic health system at the main campus, Fairview, Euclid, and South Pointe Hospital locations, as well as in North Carolina at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh and Duke Regional Hospital in Durham. Jennifer is a leader in her field, serving as a caregiver team resource in managing patients with complex conditions. Her priority is to improve patient outcomes by strengthening nursing practice. She incorporates best practice guidelines into nursing procedures for safe, quality, and cost-effective results and collaborates with healthcare team members to develop comprehensive patient care plans. She also mentors nursing staff in acquiring new skills, critical thinking development, and more. Her nursing passions include critical care, geriatrics, end-of-life, health care policy, mobility, digital education, and bioethics. She is certified in critical care (CCRN) and gerontological nursing (GERO-BC) and has received advanced training through the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium. She received the Nurses in Washington Internship (NIWI) scholarship in 2016, learning skills in political advocacy and representing nursing and Clinical Nurse Specialists on Capitol Hill. She has been an enthusiastic member of her health system's Mobility and Safe Patient Handling team for over 10 years and teaches a mobility and communications workshop monthly. Jennifer earned a Master of Education in Health Professions Education in 2021. She is skilled in creating digital education and mentors colleagues in developing clinical education. Jennifer's commitment to ethical nursing practices is a cornerstone of her career. This commitment is further demonstrated through her 2023-2024 Nursing Ethics Faculty Fellow role. Her fellowship has been community-focused, with projects aimed at increasing Advance Directive completion among marginalized populations and improving communication at the end of life for LGBTQIA+ and Black individuals. Jennifer serves on the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS) DEI and Continuing Education committees and previously on the Legislative-Regulatory and Website/Listserv committees. Jennifer is secretary for the Northeast Ohio Clinical Nurse Specialists (NEOCNS) and previously served as president-elect for the North Carolina affiliate of NACNS.
