About Jeremy Simpson

Jeremy (Jez) Simpson carried out his PhD work at the University of Warwick (UK), under the supervision of Profs. Mike Lord and Lynne Roberts, working on the mechanism by which proteins toxins such as ricin and E. coli Shiga-like toxin enter mammalian cells and then kill them. After post-doctoral work at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego (USA) in the lab of Dr. Bill Balch and the ICRF in London (UK) in the lab of Dr. Rainer Pepperkok, he was awarded a long term EMBO fellowship allowing him to move to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg (Germany). For over 9 years he worked at EMBL developing and applying novel high-throughput imaging approaches to study protein localisation in mammalian cells and how proteins are transported inside cells. In 2008 he was appointed as Full Professor of Cell Biology at University College Dublin, Ireland. His lab currently applies high-throughput microscopy and imaging technologies to study protein transport processes inside human cells, and various applications of nanotechnology, including study of the pathways taken by synthetic nanoparticles on exposure to cells, and how the cell cytoskeleton responds to cellular exposure to nanomaterials and nanosurfaces. His lab also develops novel software tools for image analysis. He has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed articles, including articles in Nature Cell Biology and Nature Methods, and a number of book chapters. He is a Fellow of the UCD Conway Institute, and runs the UCD Cell Screening Laboratory He has held a number of significant leadership roles in UCD, including Head of Subject for the BSc Cell and Molecular Biology Programme (2012-2020), Head of the School of Biology & Environmental Science (2014-2019), and Vice Principal International for the UCD College of Science (2011-2021). In 2021 he was appointed as the College Principal and Dean of Science.
