About Jericho Flores

An advisor once told me, “There seems to be something so beautiful about being able to go to the movie theater and be carried away by a story, leaving your reality and world for one to three hours to view another.” During the summers of 2017 and 2018, I took part in a month-long course in the School of Cinematic Arts at USC. There, I learned to use the AVID editing system: one of the most commonly used softwares in the film industry. I used AVID to edit a short film, which I had developed and shot in a short two weeks. Throughout these two weeks I dreamt representing the summers and community that birthed me, of expressing and storytelling for the misrepresented and misinterpreted atrocities of South Central Los Angeles. My most important value to storytelling and representation taking collaboration — minds of others coming together, creating a process and unit of art. Being the most strenuous part of production, not only in film making, but the rigor of life — being placed with diverse ideas and works, sacrificing and creating these relationships to achieve a goal, a project that will influence and guide. Yet, the most rewarding piece of production — the people around us affecting our behavior, our nature and what we learn from the countless experiences and stories could guide the very project and expression.
