About Jerry Butwid

I truly believe that industry and environmental sustainability can co-exist when you have a strategic plan, are proactively prepared for emergencies and keep everyone in industry informed of regulations and compliance expectations. Bridging the communication gap and mediating agreements that both protect the environment and promote industry is an area where I have achieved success for 10+ years as a senior Coast Guard leader. In 2010 I was accepted as a graduate student with the George Washington University’s Environmental and Energy Management Advanced Education program. I soon put my degree to good use while running FEMA’s National Response Center in DC. I planned and led responses to natural disasters and I worked on high-visibility incidents such as the Deepwater Horizon disaster. I led marine environmental responder training, authored policy and guided clean-up efforts, setting a foundation for the remainder of my Coast Guard career. I spent several years overseeing all marine safety and casualty investigations for Lake Superior before moving to Corpus Christi. In Corpus Christi, I oversee all safety, security and compliance operations in the nation’s top crude oil exporter and third largest port by total revenue tonnage, which gives me an in-depth understanding of all regulations and compliance issues. Through superb communication and relationship building skills and having the ability to bring the right people to the table, I always ensure decisions are mutually agreed upon and industry is well informed. As an active member of the South Texas Waterways Advisory Committee, I routinely mediate unprecedented initiatives that have protected port safety, mitigated environmental risks and codified policy that enabled 24/7 deliveries. As my Coast Guard career ends in July 2020, I am seeking the opportunity to leverage my knowledge of both sides of these issues to open doors and build collaboration.
