I am a Professional Engineer registered in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. I have a Mechanical Engineering degree, but my career path has led me to specialize in industrial instrumentation. I am an independent contractor who is currently under contract with Worley in Edmonton, Alberta. The LinkedIn profile may imply this is a new position, but Jacobs sold our division to Worley in 2019, so there is no change to my employer, other than the name on the business card. Many people expect an Instrumentation Engineer to have a degree in Electrical Engineering. This is because most modern instruments connect to the control systems using wire or fibre optics. But, the wires only carry the signal after the instrument has measured the process variable. Successful instrumentation engineering relies more on skills acquired when studying for a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Concepts such as thermodynamics, flow measurement, metallurgy, heat transfer, HVAC, fluid mechanics, combustion, vibration, hydraulics, and pneumatics. A good instrument engineer needs to have a solid understanding of the Industrial process and how it is measured and controlled. Specialties: Industrial Instrumentation, P & ID development, field instrument specification, HAZOP, SIL/SIS, field commissioning and plant start-up.
