About Jess Mannion
Jess Mannion is a Lecturer in both the Institute of Technology Sligo & Trinity College Dublin & doing a PhD in TCD. Jess has lectured in IT Sligo since 2009, working in the School of Social Sciences, teaching both Social Care & ECCE. She is an Adjunct Teaching Fellow in TCD since 2018, where she works casually in the School of Education & School of Nursing & Midwifery, teaching disability studies. Jess’s PhD is a co-operative inquiry study, where currently a research team of co-inquirers who have intellectual disabilities are working with Jess to explore the topic of relationships and sexuality in their own lives. She is supervised by Dr Fintan Sheerin & Dr Vivienne Brady from the School of Nursing & Midwifery in TCD. She has a keen interest in collaborative teaching methods & has published on self-assessment in higher education, after she devised the PFS Model of Self-assessment. Jess works as peer reviewer for 2 Journals, the Taylor & Francis Journal of Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, & the SAGE Journal of Intellectual Disabilities. Jess completed the following 8 higher education programmes: • Postgrad module in Sexual Consent Promotion - NUI Galway. Postgrad Cert in Teaching, Learning & Assessment – IT Sligo. • MA (Research) Social Care Practice – IT Sligo. • Cert in Addiction Studies – NUI Maynooth. • Foundation Dip in Training & Education – NUI Galway. • BA (Hons) Social Care Practice – IT Sligo. • BA (Ord) Social Care Practice – IT Sligo. • Cert in Community Development & Leadership – NUI Maynooth. Jess wants to create awareness and support students from non-traditional backgrounds, after her experiences of ADHD, working class background, early school leaving, and attending Youthreach. She is training to be an ADHD Coach in the ADDCA, New York. Her past experience involve Social Care Practice roles in the disability sector, addiction work & management in a community setting, as well as teaching in FETAC level programmes. In her spare time, Jess writes creatively to include a book chapter she has signed for and a memoir she is writing. In 2012 she was recognised as exemplifying excellence in teaching at the annual National Academy for the Integration of Research, Teaching & Learning (NAIRTL) awards. Then in 2021 announced as a Teaching Hero as part of the 2020 student-led Teaching Hero awards organised by the National Forum in collaboration with the Union of Students in Ireland that provide an opportunity for students across the country to recognise & celebrate outstanding teaching in our higher education institutions.
