About Jess Obayan

I am a licensed social worker with deep experience in care and service design, specializing in human-centered approaches that prioritize the voices and lived experiences of historically marginalized communities. As a design researcher, I conduct qualitative research to illuminate the behaviors, needs, and systemic barriers individuals face when navigating public services. My design practice has focused on supporting Black queer and trans youth, children with chronic illnesses, and young adults navigating HIV care and sexual health systems. I excel at uncovering the sometimes hidden but deeply felt experiences of community members. Rooted in empathy, curiosity, and clinical expertise, my approach translates human experiences into impactful design strategies that drive engagement and improve outcomes. My portfolio includes service design projects across the U.S. and globally, with fieldwork experience in Zambia, Ethiopia, Haiti, and Uganda.
