About Jesse Hixson

There is a possibility that my love of legal television dramas subconsciously propelled me to law school, but it is undoubtedly my passion for untangling thorny issues in service of the rights and dignity of others that has kept me there. Serious about advocacy, I have intentionally focused my legal studies and extracurricular activities on the laws, systems, treaties, and norms that form the basis of our civil and human rights and how those rights can be both protected and advanced through litigation and policy. As a rising 3L, this focus has led me to serve as the current Deputy Editor-in-Chief for Northwestern Law’s Journal of Human Rights, co-leading the development and publishing of boundary-pushing scholarship that explores the state of human rights around the globe. Prior to law school, my time was spent exploring a love for producing and managing arts and theatre. I earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Arts Entrepreneurship and Management, with a thesis focused on producing theatre that is uniquely equitable and inclusive both artistically and commercially. My interest in radical inclusivity and innovative management systems in the arts has greatly informed how I move through the legal community, cultivating empathy in spaces that too often forget the central, human element of the law. After years working in the often hectic atmosphere of theatre, I bring a calm, cool, and collected demeanor to my work environment that I believe creates space for exploration and problem-solving. As an attorney, I hope to continue the work I have started in law school and to professionally contribute and further explore areas such as: complex litigation, appellate advocacy, government transparency and accountability, freedom of expression, and international human rights. Outside of my legal studies, you’ll likely find me making the most of my Stubs membership at the nearest AMC, appreciating live performance arts of all sorts, exploring the neighborhood with my labradoodle, or raving about all things Dolly Parton.
