About Jesse Schimpf
I am a PhD candidate and NSF-GRFP fellow at UC Berkeley working on functional complex oxide thin films. I specialize in pulsed laser deposition of epitaxial thin films, and I have extensive experience with thin film structural and electrical/dielectric/ferroelectric device characterization. I have worked on a number of oxide systems during my PhD, but my major focus has been multiferroic perovskites (e.g, BiFeO3) and defect-fluorite ferroelectrics (e.g, HfO2). I am interested in understanding novel metastable structural phases in these systems and how their stability connects to synthesis conditions, epitaxial constraints, chemistry, and defect characteristics. I believe that this fundamental knowledge is critical to selecting and designing future materials systems for next-generation technology.
