Background

About Jessica Seto

Each and every day, more and more is being done to change the world for the better. At the same time, there is just not enough being done as well. I feel every human must do their part as Earth cannot speak for itself according to the Lorax. The Lorax states, “I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees for the trees have no tongues.” We must do our best as members of society to make sure the planet is still viable for the future. Every little bit helps from recycling and composting to choosing renewable energy. I studied Sustainable Environmental Design and minored in Community Development at UC Davis, so I could work with different stakeholders to sustain communities through design and careful planning.I chose to go into the project development profession because I wanted to engage in a career that would help the built community and world. Implementing green ecological practices around city landscapes and buildings is what I hope to do. I want to make a community more sustainable for future generations. Sustainability can be a complex issue that deals with current stakeholders and future citizens. There are issues that face sustainability with so many problems to tackle that it’s hard to know where to begin with. There's the need to build more homes to accommodate the growing population, incorporate more green technology, and discover new ways to reduce GHG emissions. I would begin by focusing on the challenges and accessing the opportunities of the site I am working with without compromising the opportunities of the future. As time went on, I developed a passion for transportation. Transportation makes up 50% of emissions in California and 29% of emissions in the United States. The transportation industry is rapidly growing in options to reduce emissions. Green technology such as hybrids and EVs to micromobility options such as scooters and bikeshares have transformed how people get around. More and more employers are also creating commuter programs to reduce employee emissions. These transit innovations benefit individuals, communities, and the environment at large. With transportation flourishing, I hope to continue to incorporate transportation initiatives into my future planning projects. To pursue my career, my process is to continually improve my skills and establish myself as a young leader in urban planning so that I can pursue opportunities to make the largest impact in my community and world. As a citizen of this planet, I want to do my part to sustain it as much as I can!
