Background
About Jim Brown
During and after his degree Jim undertook research with the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff University, St Fagans Museum of Welsh Life, Forest Enterprise and the British Institute in East Africa. He received an award for his undergraduate dissertation on medieval churches before securing a scholarship working at medieval sites in Kenya and Uganda, studying the impact of Islam and subsequent Christian colonization. Jim’s landscape management course was assessed on his work for Forest Enterprise in Wales and laid a foundation for his future, working on a range of landscape projects, community schemes and scheduled monument sites. During his formative years of excavation, Jim tackled every archaeological period and most site types in the East Midlands. The sites with greatest appeal were usually the more complex, typically urban, medieval sites that presented a bounty of challenges and curiosities to fire his passion for the subject and fill out his skillset. Jim is now Head of Field Archaeology for an archaeological contracting consultancy. His track record of work includes high budget projects that incorporated consultancy, extensive DBAs and project design utilizing fieldwalking, geophysical surveys, trial trench excavation, geoarchaeological borehole analysis and scientific techniques. Jim’s work for Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) served housing developments, urban regeneration, utilities and highways; rising to Senior Project Officer. Whilst with NCC he managed work at the M1 Junction 12 and on the A5-M1 Link Road, before joining MOLA where he continued to manage all aspects of archaeological projects on increasingly more significant schemes and regularly provided clients with project advice, joining ARS Ltd on HS2 in January 2021.
