Background
About Jim Burant
I am an independent curator, writer, researcher, and consultant in the areas of Canadian art history, the history of photography, and archives. I also deal with the monetary evaluation of works of art and archival collections as a practicing appraiser with the National Archival Appraisal Board of Canada, and as an independent appraiser. I have been the curator for major exhibitions for Library and Archives Canada, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Ottawa Art Gallery. I have lectured widely, including talks held under the auspices of the British Museum; Yale University; Vancouver Art Gallery; National Gallery of Canada; Carleton University; University of Dundee; and elsewhere. I have published more than 100 articles and reviews, as well as five major exhibition catalogues, and one book. I was responsible for the editing and selection of the contents of the issue no. 8 of the National Gallery of Canada online publication Review. I have lectured on archival issues in Canada, the U.S.A, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. I received the Alexander Fraser Award from the AAO in 2011 for my contributions to archives. During my 38 year career at Library and Archives Canada, I managed the art collection for 22 years, and both the art and the photo collection for 13 years. Under my management, the collections tripled in size. For my work in bringing the largest collection of Canadian art ever acquired back to Canada, I received a Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for services to Canada in 2002. I belong to the Association of Canadian Archivists, the Archives Association of Ontario, and the International Council of Museums. I am an Algonquin from the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan (Golden Lake) First Nation. A full c.v. and list of publications is available on request.
