About Jim Heuston

A company sets the tone for its persona by its messaging. The content I've created has been about people, but also about the values or what's best about the unit I was reporting on. When I organized events for the Marine Corps recruiting station in Massachusetts, I made sure that local media would cover it, but also media that represented our message. For the Marine Corps that was local sports and community websites that attracted the attention of parents and future Marines. In Media Relations, I've worked with my team to brain storm every question, preparing my leaders and my team for any possible query. As a journalist, I have to know what elements of an event make it a compelling story. Neither job allows for uncertainty or a lack of clarity to overshadow an event. Often being the only journalist on site covering a story, I've been responsible for finding the story, editing the video and transmitting product to our satillite from around the world. This is where I learned to be a resourceful, self-driven team member. It's how I mastered Final Cut, Adobe CS5, and the ever changing and upgrading of camera gear and editing equipment. Media Engagement, Interview Preparation, Professional Selling Skills, Brand Marketing, Media Analysis are skills I've learned in the classroom and used immediately in the field. Meeting the high standard of transparency the public expects while safe guarding operational security and the release of personal information is what makes veterans of military Media Relations a valuable resource for our civilian counterparts.
