Most people mistakenly believe they don't need an estate plan if they do not own a large amount of assets. They think all they need is a Last Will. However, they do not realize that if they own their assets in their own names, as most people do, then their estate has to go through probate court to be settled and distributed to their heirs by a probate judge, even with a Last Will-The cost of probate for attorney fees, accountant fees, property appraisal fees, and court costs can total 10% of the estate value or more. So even a small estate value of $250k can drain up to $25k from the estate before final distribution to the heirs.(A $500k estate can lose up to $50k, etc.).
