Background
About Jim Simpson
Jim is the CEO of Masters of Coin, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to building civic engagement through financial education. This non-profit was formed to expand the VITA services started at Scottsdale Community College (SCC) described below. At SCC, Jim was a Professor of Computer Information Systems and Accounting at Scottsdale Community College. His occupational experience is wide and varied including entrepreneurial experience as the owner of a fence contracting business, corporate experience at BF Goodrich Aerospace as an international sales representative, and professional experience as a CPA at McGladrey & Pullen, CPAs. Jim’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Marketing, a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, and a Masters in Tax, all from Arizona State University, and a PhD in Education from Walden University. During his career in the Maricopa Community College District, Jim has served in a variety of roles including many years as an academic advisor, Chair of the CIS Instructional Council, Faculty Senate President at SCC, Chair of the Faculty Meet & Confer team, and the District’s Faculty Association President. He is the Treasurer of the Maricopa Colleges Faculty Foundation and Treasurer of the Faculty Political Action Committee. Jim is also a Peer Reviewer, Team Chair, and member of the Institutional Actions Council for the Higher Learning Commission. His proudest accomplishment at SCC was the establishment of the SCC VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. This program uses student volunteers from his accounting classes and other community members to provide free income tax preparation for low-income, disabled, and elderly taxpayers. In his spare time he volunteers as a Spanish interpreter at St. Vincent de Paul’s Free Medical Clinic. He also sings and plays guitar at various coffeehouses around the Phoenix valley.
