About Jim Talpey

As a geologist, I'm driven to study the nature of places. The geology of almost anywhere is fascinating. Human land use, the history of places, and ecology are also focuses of interest. I was influenced to pursue geology by Donald B. Potter, a college professor. He showed me how scientific discovery comes from accurate data, impartial observation, clear-thinking, and imagination; Dr. Potter taught me how to map geologic formations and instilled in me a sense of bettering the world through science. I try to be flexible in thinking and precise in measurements. I operate with multiple working hypotheses most of the time and strive to separate facts from inferences. In hindsight, discoveries like continental drift and recurring sheets of glacier ice seem obvious, but people had to find these things out. The history of science shapes our understanding in so many ways."In the field of science, chance favors only the prepared mind."-Pasteur. I have a keen interest in discovery and enjoy working with all kinds of people on projects that improve our world. My consulting influencer was Larry Smith, CEO of Haley & Aldrich, who led a team of talented scientists and engineers on a string of great achievements over the years of my employment with that company. My skills and abilities include critical thinking, writing, and problem-solving.
