Background
About Jim Tempest
I am a professional musician and educator. I have a unique blend of musical and leadership training that give me the ability to communicate with others about a variety of subjects. My experience as a performer has given me the skill to comfortably address large audiences while my experience as a private music instructor allows me the comfort to work in small, intimate groups with equal aplomb. Since 1984, I have taught and freelanced in Vancouver performing all kinds of music. I am on faculty at Vancouver Community College as a sessional instructor teaching trombone students and conducting a brass ensemble. From 2004 to 2017, I was the Director of Music of the Band of the Fifteenth Field Regiment. I negotiated with internal and external clients, worked with other elements of the command to plan and organize exercises, directed an administrative staff and worked with groups from the community to provide musical services for public events. The band is one of the primary community relations tools of the 39 Canadian Brigade Group and it was my responsibility to ensure the band represented the Canadian Army in the best possible light at all times. From 2012 to 2016, I was the Music Advisor to the 3rd Canadian Division of the Canadian Army, liaising on behalf of all bands in Western Canada to the Division Headquarters. In this position, I was responsible for advising the Division Commander on policy and practice surrounding bands and in communicating with the 11 bands in Western Canada. From 2016 to 2020, I was the Senior Director of Music for the Canadian Army, part of staff officers in the Army Headquarters G1 Management Section. In this position, I led a small team that advised the CA Commander on all issues surrounding music, bands and ceremonial and liaised with other commands on behalf of the Army. Under my watch, the Army Music team developed policy that supported a new CAF MESIP for the music trade, supervised a network of division and brigade advisors, and advised on 44 bands and the nearly full time and part time musicians who work for the Army across Canada. Since leaving the Army, I have continued to teach music and conduct the Delta Concert Band. With a pension, I can enjoy my passions again. Specialties: music conducting, arranging and instruction office supervision, team building, leadership, policy development, stakeholder management public relations, client liaison, concert and event planning
