Background
About Jim Wilson
I have worked in product development for more than thirty years and am now an applications engineer. I began my career as an automotive engineer, where I specialized in new model development of heavy trucks and passenger cars. My areas of expertise included ergonomics, fuel economy testing, vehicle dynamics, competitor analysis, and aerodynamics development work. Much of the work included both objective and subjective testing methods. For the past ten years, I have been working for Lutron Electronics in their window systems division, which produces motorized window treatments for both residential and commercial markets. I was team leader for several new product launches, which required interfacing with Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, and Customer Service. In my current position as an applications engineer, I work with our sales team, Lutron dealers, architects, specifiers, general contractors, and end users to find a cost-effective and labor-effective solution for their automated shade systems. Often, this work involves creating customized products and hardware suited to a specific project. With my excellent hands-on skills and problem-solving abilities, I can envision a solution quickly, create visual aids to communicate the solution to the customer, and begin working on design concepts for the custom components. As the project progresses, a site visit and meeting with the architect or general contractor is very beneficial to truly understand the application challenges. In many cases, the automated shading system is part of a larger building or campus system that includes a lighting control system. I am well-versed in discussing the integration of Lutron's shading system into our own, or third party systems. I also provide installation training for new shade dealers. My current skills include 3D and 2D CAD, custom product design. rapid-rototyping. injection-molded plastic part design. sheet metal fabrication, and aluminum extrusion design.
