About Jingyi Ran

I'm Jingyi, currently working towards my PhD in Chemistry at the University of Southern California. My work involves a fun mix of machine learning and computational methods, like density functional theory, to dig deeper into chemistry and physics. I've been knee-deep in a couple of cool projects - studying the energy levels of solar cell materials and checking out the fluorescence responses of OLED materials. The whole Covid-19 shutdown in March 2020 started me on this path with data and machine learning. With plenty of time on my hands, I jumped into learning from Youtube, started with a few small projects and before I knew it, I aced my PhD qualifying exam with a proposal on using machine learning to discover piezoelectric materials. By early 2022, I had my hands on the Google Data Analytics Certificate - all the while working with SQL, spreadsheets, Tableau, R, and Python. It was quite a journey, and I got to tackle my first case study during this time. My big aim? Combine my love for chemistry, knack for data science, and excitement for AI to help shape a more sustainable environment and contribute to a more positive society. I believe in the power of data to transform our understanding and I'm stoked to see where this journey leads- Member of Women in Chemistry at USC - Github: https://github.com/Jingyi-Ran
