About Jinty Jackson

As a researcher at City Occupied, I conduct qualitative research on housing and land occupations in Cape Town's inner city, a topic that has received little attention in the post-COVID period. I collaborate with grassroots movements active in occupations to co-produce research that reflects their experiences and challenges, and that can be used as an advocacy tool for affordable housing for all. With over 15 years of experience as a news journalist and media professional, I have developed strong communication skills and a passion for telling impactful stories. I have covered a wide range of topics in Sub-Saharan Africa, including environmental crimes, natural gas and coal rushes, armed conflict, and politics. I have also acquired skills in academic editing, publishing, and translating, and I am fluent in French and have a working knowledge of Portuguese. My mission is to use data and research to understand how cities of the Global South are transforming from the bottom up and to advocate for change. I am familiar with the principles and current thinking in sustainable urban development, and I have a keen interest in renewable energy, biodiversity, complexity, and resilience. I have the ability to build relationships, establish networks, and collaborate with others who share my vision of creating more inclusive and sustainable cities.
