Background

About Jo Booth

I currently work for Leeds Arts University as the Assistant Head of Postgraduate Studies. In this role I support the delivery of a large variety of arts based PG courses. Between 2019 and 2022 I worked at De Montfort University as Departmental Head and Associate Professor for Visual Art. In this role I managed a staff team of 20-25 academics, and looked after a cohort of approximately 400 UG and PG students. I am experienced in managing large and diverse academic teams, and in writing, reviewing, developing and revalidating academic courses, including introducing new pathways and awards. I am accustomed to working collaboratively across university departments and managing special projects. I am an External Examiner at University of Northampton & Leeds Trinity University. I will shortly take up a further EE role for the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham. I trained in Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University. After graduating I spent several years teaching art and photography in various community venues before undertaking an Arts Council Traineeship in Gallery and Museum Education at the (then) National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford. Later, I took up the post of Learning Development Co-ordinator at the Museum and remained there for several years. During this time I worked extensively with the Museum’s archives, and supported the permanent and temporary exhibitions programme. I began teaching in higher education settings in 2007 and have since worked for various universities including Leeds Beckett University, University of Huddersfield, Nottingham Trent University, the University for the Creative Arts (Rochester campus), De Montfort University and most recently, LAU. I hold an MA Visual Art and I am trained to Post Graduate Diploma level in Post Compulsory Education and Training. I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SF imminent). I am an active researcher and I have a particular interest in heritage, and photographic archives. My visual practice usually features found photographs, and material drawn from my personal collection of domestic photographs which includes many hand-coloured magic lantern slides. I have exhibited my work widely and participated many group shows including at the Brighton Photo Biennial in 2016. I have also exhibited at the Crossley Gallery at Dean Clough in Halifax, at Left Bank and Bowery Gallery in Leeds, and at the South Square Gallery and the Dye House Gallery in Bradford. I have a forthcoming solo exhibition at the Dye House Gallery, in late 2023.
