About Jo Mynard
Dr. Jo Mynard is an applied linguist and specialist in learner autonomy and supporting language learning outside the classroom. She is a Professor in the Faculty of Global Liberal Arts and Director of the Self-Access Learning Center (SALC) at Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) in Japan, where she has worked since 2008. She is also the Director of the Research Institute for Learner Autonomy Education (RILAE) at KUIS. She is the co-founder and Managing Director of Candlin & Mynard ePublishing (since 2012) and Series Editor of the Autonomous Language Learning series http://candlinandmynard.com At KUIS, she advises language learners and oversees operations, research, and the general direction of the SALC. She teaches undergraduate courses in English for Global Liberal Arts and Self-Directed Learning. She also teaches graduate courses as part of the MA TESOL programme at the KUIS Graduate School. She co-developed and co-coordinates the continuing professional development courses in Advising in Language Learning and Advisor Education. https://kuis.kandagaigo.ac.jp/rilae/ She has been the editor of SiSAL Journal (Studies in Self-Access Learning) since its foundation in 2010. She is also one of the founding editors of Relay Journal and The Journal for the Psychology of Language Learning (JPLL). She was an IATEFL Learner Autonomy Special Interest Group committee member from 2001 to 2018 and remains a SIG advisor. http://lasig.iatefl.org Her professional interests are learner autonomy, advising in language learning, self-access learning, affect, and CALL. She has co-authored and co-edited several books on advising and / learner autonomy. She established the Learning Enhancement Center at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi and consulted on developing self-access centres and advising programmes in Japan, the UAE, Cambodia, Mexico, and Turkey. She has lived in 12 countries (in chronological order): Wales, England, the USA, France, Germany, Australia, Spain, Ireland, the UAE, Argentina, Japan, and Italy. She has also had extended stays in Brazil, Mexico, and Thailand.
