About Joan Ching

I’m a passionate nurse leader of quality and safety for more than 30 years. I’ve been effective at applying Lean process improvement methods to streamline processes in all sizes of healthcare systems. My efforts have led to better patient outcomes such as reducing the spread of infection and preventing medical errors from reaching patients. I use my extensive knowledge of management and healthcare regulations to inform solutions for both clinical and non-clinical problems. As much as I champion action, I spend time weighing the evidence and formulating good measures so my teams know we’re headed in the right direction. My doctoral degree and health services research background are powerful assets. For instance, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ technical expert panel I served on developed electronic performance measures that have improved blood sugar management in hospitals across the country. Similarly my medication safety publications provide a roadmap for organizations to improve their processes so patients only receive the intended medications - nothing else. I’m motivated by a continued interest in helping others to improve their products & services. That’s why I do my darndest to relate to and communicate with anyone from Board to bedside. Sharing a similar commitment to excellence, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation invested three years of executive development in me so I might work more effectively across silos, take strategic risks and coach for excellence.
