About Joan Cook

I graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Public and Environmental Affairs in 1983. I started my career at the Indiana State Department of Health in Retail and Manufactured Foods. After leaving state government, I spent 27 years working in different capacities at the Marion County Public Health Department. In March of 2012, I began working with Health by Design, a diverse coalition that brings together advocates of community design, transportation and health to support healthy and active living in central Indiana and beyond. In this capacity, I have worked along with partners to help pass a Complete Streets Policy for Indianapolis, was instrumental in planning the first Indiana Walk Summit, support increasing and improving transit statewide; convened a work group to advocate for pedestrian safety, and work on issues relevant to bicycling, walking and transit such as infrastructure, safety, education, and promotion. I currently serves on the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Council, am a member of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Trails Advisory Board, coordinate Indiana Walks, and I participate in several collective impact initiatives to improve the health and well-being of central Indiana residents.
