About Joan Gardner

I am the project manager for the Maritime Surveillance System (MSS) Project at Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific (formerly SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific). I hold advanced degrees in Geology and Ocean Sciences. My career has spanned project solutions for undersea surveillance and acoustics, terrestrial mapping, Arctic sea-ice changes associated with climate change, airborne identification of downed aircraft and service member remains associated with past conflicts, foliage penetration techniques for counter-narcotics/terrorism and seafloor seep/methane hydrate research. I presently hold an Affiliate Faculty position with the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, University of Hawaii Manoa, in addition to my position as a Project Manager at NIWC Pac, where I am involved in collaborative programs in maritime domain awareness, coastal processes and alternative energy resources.
