Background

About Joan Li

I am a marine scientist with a strong focus on GeoAI, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and remote sensing, particularly through drone-based technologies. My expertise lies in leveraging cutting-edge machine learning techniques and spatial analysis to monitor and understand marine ecosystems, with a specific focus on benthic habitat, and sea cucumbers. I am passionate about integrating technology with environmental science to drive conservation efforts. In my role as an Earth Observation Data Scientist at GeoNadir, I utilized GIS and remote sensing data from drones to monitor and map critical marine habitats, including the Great Barrier Reef. I developed and applied machine learning models for image processing, object detection, classification, and change detection, particularly for marine species like sea cucumbers. By collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, I integrated remote sensing data with satellite imagery and field observations, providing in-depth analyses of marine ecosystems to support conservation, environmental policy, and marine biology research. An enthusiastic diver and amateur underwater photographer, I combine my love for the ocean with my expertise in AI and GeoAI to contribute to a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems and develop innovative solutions for their protection.
