About Joanna Bernard

As the AFN Regional Chief for New Brunswick, I am committed to advancing the rights and interests of the First Nations in the province and across the country. I have over 20 years of work experience in various roles related to economic development, governance, and advocacy for Indigenous communities. I am also an Honorary Colonel of the Canadian Armed Forces, where I support the military personnel and foster the relationship between the forces and the First Nations. In my previous role as an Economic Development Officer with the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation, I contributed to the success of the Grey Rock Power Center, a multi-million dollar commercial and entertainment complex that generates revenue and employment for the community. I have multiple honours and certifications, including the Order of New Brunswick, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the Successful Public Speaking certificate from Dale Carnegie Training. I have strong skills in strategic planning, leadership, negotiation, and public speaking, as well as a deep knowledge of Indigenous culture, history, and issues. I am passionate about creating opportunities and positive outcomes for the First Nations, and I value collaboration, respect, and diversity in my work.
