Background
About Joanna Duff
After showing an early interest in languages and literacy, I began my undergraduate studies in French Translation and Applied Linguistics at Heriot Watt University in 2010. During this time, I spent a year teaching English in a French secondary school, which sparked my passion for teaching. After completing my degree, I pursued the PGDE Primary course at the University of Dundee. Following a successful teaching career in the North-East of Scotland, I joined the University of Dundee as a Lecturer in September 2023. I teach across the ITE programmes at Dundee and lead the MA4 Thesis Module. I am keen to promote discourse around Learning for Sustainability, Curriculum Theory, and the role of literacy and language in the classroom. My research interests include curriculum theory and Learning for Sustainability, which was the focus of my Masters’ dissertation in 2018. Currently, I am working on my Doctorate of Education, undertaking a theoretical study of curriculum and the role empty signifiers, such as ‘excellence,’ play in curriculum making. I am an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher with a passion for Learning for Sustainability and ensuring our young people are equipped with the skills they need to be positive change-makers in an increasingly global world. My goal is to have a voice in the development and direction of education in Scotland while continuing to deliver the highest levels of learning and teaching to Scottish pupils and student teachers. Alongside my passion for developing a learning and teaching environment that encourages and supports students to become active participants in an increasingly global society, I am a strong advocate for developing their sense of citizenship and knowledge of the world around them, particularly their responsibility to the environment and to others. Key Words: Learning for Sustainability, Impact On Student Knowledge and Understanding of Sustainability, Literacy Programme, Curriculum for Excellence, Story, Interdisciplinary Learning, Action Competence, Sustainability, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
