About Jody Johnson

With over 25 years of experience in early childhood education, I have the expertise to support the academic and professional development of current and future early childhood educators and to promote the health, education, and welfare of children and families. An interest in theories related to bonding and attachment during the early years of life evolved into a undertaking a second masters in Trauma and Resilience in Education, PreK-12). After completing this program, I felt compelled to advocate for incorporating into early childhood courses content that not only increases awareness of the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) but also shines a light on the powerful influence of positive childhood experiences (PACEs) as protective factors. An outgrowth of advocacy was creating a course, Trauma-Informed Teaching, which I frequently teach. In addition to content on trauma and resilience, the content is focused on trauma-informed practices and using a trauma-informed lense to support children who may present challenging behaviors as well as developing strategies for supporting children who may have a history or are experiencing neglect, abuse, and exploitation. As an Associate/Adjunct Professor in higher education, my aspiration is to inspire students to develop the skills and dispositions often found in highly impactful educators. I invite students to approach teaching with the understanding that children are powerful agents in their learning. Through observation and reflection, teachers create and facilitate opportunities for children to experience and learn about their world. Educators must acknowledge that families are a important source of information; it is important to honor the values they hold and the desires they have for their child.
