Background
About Joe Callingham
I am a Dutch-Australian radio astronomer based at ASTRON, where I am Head of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Science group. This position involves managing ~20 astronomers, and helping form long-term science strategy for the institute. I am also an Associate Professor at the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy, University of Amsterdam. Scientifically, I specialise in studying stars and exoplanets at radio wavelengths, which provides information about how magnetic fields are generated on such bodies. Such information is important for helping assess whether certain planets have favourable conditions for life as we know it. Previously, I was a Veni Fellow (2020-2023) and adjunct Assistant Professor (2023-2025) at Leiden University, and the de Bruyn postdoctoral fellowship at ASTRON (2017-2020). I completed my PhD in astrophysics at The University of Sydney in 2017. My PhD was focussed on understanding radio galaxy evolution and developing the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), a SKA precursor.
