About Joe Muller

Senior Policy Advisor, Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism: policy analysis in an advisory capacity. Most recently I served as a Senior Strategic Advisor to the Director, Niagara Escarpment Commission, working in policy analysis and development, project and resource management, land-use planning and liaising with Indigenous communities. Previously, I was I was program manager in Heritage Planning for Toronto, overseeing heritage planning projects and programs. Prior to that a brief stint as supervisor for heritage planning at the City of Mississauga, and before that a heritage planner at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport (Ontario), working on the PastPort archaeology/cultural heritage database development, project managing the new MTCS GIS app, policy/program initiatives, carrying out stakeholder and public outreach, and reviewing infrastructure and large private projects like highways, bridges pipelines and mines, for their impacts on heritage resources. Earlier, as cultural heritage planner for the City of Hamilton, drafted its archaeology management plan : authored First Nations engagement and consultation protocol, developed built heritage emergency management protocol and heritage property standards by-law, produced/edited municipal heritage inventory publications, wrote reports to Planning Committee and Council for heritage permits, property designations, and planning initiatives, and liaising with First Nations, politicians, stakeholders, and citizens After completing my graduate thesis program (on Early Paleo-Indian site excavations and a regional syntheses of site and paleoenvironmental data) I taught undergrad and graduate courses at University of Maryland College Park and Lakehead University, building GIS labs and conducting data management and analysis at both. Through my undergraduate and graduate studies I worked in the archaeology consulting industry, from field tech to principal investigator and company owner. I also had a three-year stint as a radio-engineering technician, building and maintaining broadcast systems in commercial radio: I retain an interest in computer, data & audio networks, my Bix clips and related tools, and continue to do A/V productions and live-stream.
