About Joe Mullis

I began my career in the legal field as a runner with Leitner, Williams, Dooley & Napolitan, one of the oldest and most established defense firms in Tennessee, where I gained early exposure to the operations of attorneys and courts. I later served as a law clerk with Legal Aid of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, supporting pro bono representation of low-income clients and successfully conducting an IRS Collections Due Process hearing. Since then, I have built over 15 years of experience as a U.S. tax attorney and business advisor, serving small businesses, individual taxpayers, and expatriates. My work has included income tax compliance, IRS controversy resolution, and advising entrepreneurs on entity structuring and tax planning. After relocating to Switzerland, I expanded my practice to include expatriate taxation, cross-border compliance, and foreign reporting obligations (FBAR, FATCA, and remediation of undisclosed assets). I have been recognized five times by the Tennessee Supreme Court as an Attorney for Justice for pro bono service, reflecting both professional dedication and my roots in the Volunteer State. My commitment to service continues in Switzerland, where I serve provisionally on the Association Committee of the International School Basel and as a room parent and Campus Affairs liaison at the ISB Junior School. To complement my legal training, I have pursued advanced CLE in international tax (NYU and IRS programs) and post-JD university coursework in finance, investments, accounting, business analytics, and information systems. This combination strengthens my ability to advise clients on complex cross-border financial and tax issues. I am passionate about helping individuals, families, and closely held businesses manage their tax obligations and structure their affairs responsibly, whether in the U.S. or across borders.
