About Joel Ness

Professor of Engineering by day. I am also faculty adviser to the North Dakota Beta chapter of Tau Beta Pi - The Engineering Honor Society! I have taught such courses as Statics, Dynamics, Mechanics of Materials, Introduction to Mechanical Design, Dynamic Systems Analysis, Mechanical Vibrations, Fluid Mechanics, Robotics, Transportation Modeling, Kinematics of Machines, and more. Have even taugh Calculus I, II, and Differential Equations. I have research interests in Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Modeling, Stress Analysis, Mechanical Vibrations, Transportation Modeling, and Acoustics. I have also worked extensively with American Crystal Sugar Company in various areas of company operations specifically related to sugarbeet long term storage, quality, piling operations, and Quality Lab acoustic noise control. I also farm 1900 acres of wheat, soybeans and sugarbeets in the fertile Red River Valley of NW Minnesota. I endorse Wilson Outfielders Softball Gloves and MIKEN bats. I've played competitive softball for 25+ years. I've been to a number of national tournaments in numerous classes in both mens and co-ed teams. Most recently C Nationals in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 2003. Still in left field playing with the young guys and a few older ones on a Minnesota State Championship team in 2013. As long as I can get out of bed the next day I'll keep playing-) For fun I play a Yamaha 8335la custom trumpet designed by Wayne Bergeron and use a Marc Shew 1 mouthpiece. You can hear me with Dick King and his Classic Swing Band, featured at numerous churches, weddings and other events, and sitting in and blowing a "dubba or two" with area college and high school pep bands.
