About Johan Gustafson
Experienced shark ecologist and science communicator. Johan has appeared in multiple National Geographic documentaries as a shark expert, lead many expeditions throughout Queensland’s marine environments undertaking fish biodiversity, coral and oceanographic surveys. Johan has extensive experience in animal movement research using tagging technologies on many species including sharks, turtles and whales. Johan also has highly credible experience in ecological surveys using various methods such as; gill netting, baited remote underwater video (BRUV), SCUBA line surveys, manta tows and a range of cutting-edge technologies. Johan has undertaken these works in both a research and consulting capacity for Queensland Government agencies, local city councils and primary industry. Johan’s strengths include oceanographic surveys, high quality scientific report writing, impact assessments, environmental problem identification and solution proposals, large shark research, grant writing and reporting, fish and habitat ecological assessments and science communication. I have also been involved in environmental projects such as the Gladstone harbor dredging program and the ecological assessment for the Gold Coast Broad water, and estuary systems. My areas of interest and expertise include physical oceanography, ecology as well as biophysical interactions between the disciplines, habitat assessment water quality as well as characterizing habitats for management plans. For the past 4 years I have been working exclusively on shark ecology in Queensland, including the QLD hammerhead shark tagging project, Bull shark tagging and movement and have tagged Tiger and white sharks offshore and inshore. The projects look at the movement and behaviors of large shark species, habitat suitability and interactions as well as physiological toxicological processes.
